The TEARS Foundation works directly with the funeral home and/or cemetery to make the payment for the bereaved family.
Families who live in Kansas, New Jersey or Washington State, and whose baby was between 20 weeks gestation up to one year old, are eligible. TEARS is here to support families who do not have enough resources to pay for their funeral expenses.
TEARS will pay up to $500 towards the cost of burial services, including grave markers. If the family chooses cremation, we will pay $250 towards the price of the direct cremation (including transportation and professional services). We can also pay additionally up to $250 if the family chooses an urn that goes beyond the original $250. But specifically for the cost of a direct cremation we will not pay more than $250.

To apply for assistance for a family, please click on the 2010 Application for Assistance , fill it out completely, and mail or fax it to us, along with an itemized statement of the services rendered and a copy of either the death certificate or fetal death certificate. Once we receive the complete information, we will send a check to the funeral home.
TEARS does not pay for past funeral expenses. The request for assistance must be received no more than 30 days from the day of the funeral. TEARS pays the funeral home and/or cemetery directly and we ask that funds are not passed through to the family. We are not able to assist families with a loss under 20 weeks gestation or over one year old. We do not pay for airfare or other extraordinary expenses.
